The God of the Bible is like no one else. The more you study His character, the more you will grasp how infinitely worthy He is of trust. Read 5 of His attributes below, and if you’re eager for more, check out the Praying the Attributes of God Challenge!
1. He is Creator.
You alone are the Lord. You have made the heavens,
The heaven of heavens with all their host,
The earth and all that is on it,
The seas and all that is in them.
You give life to all of them,
And the heavenly host bows down before You.
Nehemiah 9:6
If we need any reason to trust God it’s simply this: that before time began He was, and He brought everything into being.
The Lord automatically has full power and authority because He is the giver and taker of life.
He spoke the world into existence, He knits together every person in the womb. He gives you breath, and laughter, and tears, and a spirit that can worship Him for eternity. Thus, if any us creatures have need, we should turn to Him who created us.
2. He is Sustainer.
‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10
Not only did the Lord create the world, but He sustains it moment by moment.
We know that He did not abandon the planet and its inhabitants, but establishes and maintains its natural cycles, systems, and plans for His glory.
Beyond the physical world, the Holy Spirit sustains righteous men and women – those God has called to love His Son.
The Lord uplifts and restores believers’ spirits, carrying us forward toward everlasting life. He is the source of our endurance, perseverance, and purpose.
When we are brought low, facing a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, or in the flames of injustice, He acts on our behalf, upholding us by His grace, strength, and love. We must cling to His Word, for it is the hope and truth we that enables us to press on and serve Him boldly.
3. He is Unchanging.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17
God is the one constant in our lives. While everything else shifts, subject to change, God remains as He is. Always.
No matter what’s happening on the earth or in heaven, He is above it all, unaffected, stable, true to Himself in every respect.
He is the only one worthy of complete trust.
The world tells us to follow our hearts, but boy are they fickle! They are fluctuating in their feelings, whims, desires, and knowledge, and burdened by sin. God, however, is steadfast in His ways.
God's love and wisdom never waver; they are trustworthy. Share on X4. He is Omnipotent.
“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me? Jeremiah 32:27
Nothing is too difficult for God. Savor and swallow that truth. God will accomplish His plan, and nothing can stop Him. His might has no boundaries.
From creation, to the parting of the Red Sea, to the victory of Christ’s resurrection, God has brought about miracle after miracle.
This is one major reason why worry is so ridiculous. We struggle with anxiety, wondering “what if?” or “how about that?” when the Lord has the power to turn any situation we face completely around. And if He doesn’t, it is not because He cannot, but because He lovingly and wisely has a superior plan.
God works for His glory, and does so by working out good for those who love Him. That “good” is for believers to become more like Christ the Son. (Romans 8:28-29) That is a plan we can always depend on.
5. He is Eternal.
The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever. Isaiah 40:8
Since God is the only Being that is everlasting, He should be our focus, not temporary things. He will never fade away, and so we should place our faith in Him.
Remember that Jesus promises that all who believe in Him will have eternal life (John3:16).
He can only make such a claim because He Himself is eternal, the One who has always been and will always be. We can trust this true Savior.
As we study God’s attributes it becomes clear that all intertwine to give Him a glory that is solely His. No creature can hold these characteristics apart from the Lord.
