We are to love our neighbor as ourself, and our husband should be considered our closest one! Skip the chocolate boxes (or don’t!) and bless your husband in these 5 areas, on Valentine’s Day or any day!
1. Memory
Idea: Send your hubs down memory lane with a traditional scrapbook or modern photo collage (i.e. created through Shutterfly) that captures your favorite moments together. Be sure to leave space for future fun!
You can also add pizazz with a scavenger hunt or progressive dinner that involves taking him to local places where you’ve had funny or sweet times together, presenting the memory book at the finale.
2. Spontaneity
Idea: Tuck these 32 Affirmation Cards for Your Husband in his wallet, on his pillow, next to his computer, and so forth. Another example? Delight him with thoughtful love “coupons,” which offer romantic or helpful activities that go beyond the day of love!
“How handsome you are, my beloved, And so pleasant!” Song of Solomon 1:16
3. Poetry
Idea: In the spirit of Song of Songs, write a sonnet of devotion or haikus of praise. Read it to him privately before bedtime or in front of the kids for some warm laughs!
“Put me like a seal over your heart, Like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death…The very flame of the Lord.” Song of Solomon 8:6
4. Intimacy
Idea: Call the baby sitter, shut off the phones, go for a walk, grab delicious take-out, then sprinkle the bedroom with candles to set the mood…
Spend one-on-one “quality” time together, at the house or on a getaway. Spice things up! This gift can never be underestimated.
“Come, my lover, let us go to the countryside, let us spend the night in the villages.” Song of Solomon 7:11
5. Hospitality
Idea: A classic but one that’s well loved – cook his favorite meal or satisfy his sweet tooth with a rockin’ dessert, and feel free to involve him in the prep if he likes culinary arts! You could also foster friendly competition with your own family version of “Iron Chef” or “Cupcake Wars,” with the kids serving as assistants and voting for the winning dish.
Select one of these areas to focus on or mix and match for a winning (and loving) combination!
